Hi. I'm Kara Sheridan and am finishing up my first year as a clinical psychology Ph.D. student at Nova Southeastern
University. I am specializing in children and adolescents with a research focus of child abuse and disability issues. In addition
to school, I'm involved in several advocacy groups and that has become an important part of my life.
I started KaraSwims.com as I prepared to swim for Team USA in the 2004 Paralympics. I swam for Team USA in the 2004
Paralympics. I set two American records in Athens and, for now, I am semi-retired! So I use this place as a platform
for updates on what's going on in my life, new pictures, a forum to post recently published articles I've written, and a place
to connect people to issues/information I feel passionately about.
It is my hope that some people who visit this site will learn more about what it's like to be a proud with a disability.
I have a bone condition called Osteogenesis Imperfecta and use a wheelchair. I love learning more and staying connected
with the disability culture and try to make my own contribution by writing for a couple of newsletters, contacting legislators
occasionally, and staying up to date on current events in the community. involves advocacy on issues related to people with
disabilities.
Of course between school, work, and advocacy, I make time for fun. Right now, my hobbies include reading and creating graphics
using Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop. I also love exploring Miami with visitors and taking Bailey and Obie to the dog park.
Finally, one of my favorite hobbies has become keeping in touch with the amazing people that I've "met" through this site...so
